Police officer Tilakdhari Saroj has been arrested

A police officer in India has been accused of raping a 13-year-old girl after she went to the police station to report that she had been gang-raped by four men.

Authorities say the police officer Tilakdhari Saroj was arrested after he tried to flee Uttar Pradesh, the state where the crime is said to have taken place.

The victim is said to have gone to the police station with her aunt after the initial rape occurred to make a statement.

It was at this point Saroj is accused of taking the girl into a room and raping her in front of her aunt.

Her dad spoke to the police and said that four men had taken his daughter to the neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh on April 22 where she was raped by all of them over four days.

She was then brought back to her home village in the Lalitpur district before the men fled.

Lalitpur district police chief Nikhil Pathak spoke to reporters when the story broke and confirmed that the officer has been suspended.

He also confirmed that six people were named in the case and four had been arrested, including Saroj.

Six sub-inspectors, six head constables, five women constables, 10 constables and two drivers who were present at the police station when the alleged rape took place were also suspended.

He said: “The SHO is suspended and he is a named criminal so we have formed teams to arrest him. After I was informed of it, I ensured that a case was filed.”

Five of the accused named by the victim in her initial report were also arrested on Wednesday.

Three of them were arrested in Lalitpur while two others were arrested from Madhya Pradesh.

The allegations has sent shockwaves around the whole of India with the National Human Rights Commission, India, demanding a report from the Government of Uttar Pradesh within four weeks.

He has been suspended but he maintains his innocence

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the Uttar Pradesh state government in a tweet.

She wrote: “The gang-rape of a 13-year-old girl in Lalitpur and then her rape by the police in charge when she went to file a complaint shows how genuine law and order reforms are being suppressed in the noise of ‘bulldozers’.

“If police stations are not safe for women, then where will they go to take complaints?”

If convicted, Saroj could face life in prison under the stringent POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act brought in in 2012 after a young woman was gang-raped in New Delhi and later died of her injuries.

But he has maintained his innocence.

Saroj has been quoted as saying: “Investigative agencies should be called in to conduct the probe into the matter with utter honesty.

“After the investigation, if it’s proven I’m guilty then… I am 100 per cent innocent.”
