Grant returns to EastEnders as Phil seeks his help to destroy Keeble?

Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) made an ominous phone call before leaving the Square, as the EastEnders legend set off to find a way to get DCI Keeble (Alison Newman) out of his life once and for all.

Keeble, as viewers know, is on a mission to crush the Mitchells, and thus she arrested Billy (Perry Fenwick) on a murder charge in a bid to do so.

A flashback episode of the serial drama, which aired last month, revealed the reason why, as Keeble’s dad Macolm – a security guard at a warehouse – was shot and killed by Mitchell patriarch Eric in 1979.

Billy was not only there on the night in question, but he had also procured the firearm used in the murder, a discovery which Keeble only made a matter of months ago – hence her sudden urge to seek revenge.

Phil, meanwhile, was determined to protect his loved ones, who Keeble threatened to destroy if he failed to comply with her plot, and thus he gave her a statement that put Billy at the scene of the historic crime, resulting in his cousin getting arrested.

Billy is now facing a life behind bars, and with Keeble going out of her way to make life difficult for him, he’s unable to rely on trusted solicitor Ritchie Scott (Sian Webber) – or anyone reliable from her firm.

Phil has been left feeling incredibly guilty, and Thursday’s (October 6) edition of the BBC One soap saw him come to a huge decision, as he told Kat that he simply can’t just ‘sit around’ and watch Billy go under.

The hard-man packed a bag and prepared to leave the Square, hoping to get whatever ammunition he could to take Keeble down before she puts Billy in prison.

As he was driving out of the Square, he took one last lingering look at the sign of wine bar Peggy’s and made a secret phone call.

‘It’s me’, he said to the mystery person on the other end of the phone. ‘I need your help.’

The question is: just who is it that Phil’s talking to? The likely option is Grant (Ross Kemp), who viewers have long called for to return.

The fact that he lingered on Peggy’s name before making the call likely signifies that he went to someone he could trust with his dilemma – someone who is faaaamily.

What’s more, Grant was there on the night of the historic robbery and murder, so it’s possible that Phil would want to get him involved in the drama.

Will the dastardly Keeble be the catalyst in bringing Grant back to the Square?
